D’Arcy talks about his experience competing in the Vis Moot competition

The greatest skill I learnt from the Vis Moot was how to research.'

In a series of blog posts we are currently revealing our students’ experiences at the 2016 Vis Moot competition in Hong Kong and Vienna.

D’Arcy Hope and Joseph Braverman, who competed in Vienna, progressed through to the elimination rounds and their tremendous achievement placed Deakin Law School in the top 20 per cent of participating institutions.

Today, D’Arcy talks about how competing in the Vis Moot built his confidence and improved his research and public speaking skills.

D’Arcy Hope

‘The greatest skill I learnt from the Vis Moot was how to research. I was really lucky to have some very clever teammates who spent hours in the library studying for the competition. Thankfully, some of this dedication wore off on me and I now feel much more confident with regard to completing my other assignments at Deakin.

Not only that, my public speaking skills have dramatically improved. I recently participated in an assessment centre for a job application where applicants were required to present and I used a very similar structure to my argument in the Vis Moot competition. I really believe I will be able to excel in future wherever I may be required to present.

A particular highlight of the experience for me was learning and working alongside Dr Benjamin Hayward, I’ve never met a more dedicated person in this field. Dr Hayward was excellent in providing endless support for all the team members and the passion and enthusiasm he demonstrated to us, has really provided me with the spark I need to finish my law degree and to achieve my best.’

Congratulations to the 2016 Deakin Law School Vis Moot team. We wish them all the best for their continued studies.
