Preparing for life as a lawyer

A 2-day intensive workshop which assists students transfer from school to practice.

In partnership with leading law firm Arnold Bloch Leibler (ABL), Deakin Law School’s Centre on the Legal Profession is presenting a unique two-day workshop that’s designed to provide law students with key insights into the everyday realities of working as a commercial lawyer. 

Presented by senior ABL lawyers, the ‘Transition from Law School to Law Practice’ is an innovative, interactive program that uses case study methods and real-life examples in and intense training program that covers:

  • initial client engagement, and ethical duties and responsibilities 
  • letter writing and other communications in legal practice 
  • understanding and addressing, your clients' needs 
  • making mistakes and what to do about it 
  • the anatomy of a commercial transaction 
  • dealing with disputes including alternative dispute resolution and litigation.

This outstanding event offers the opportunity for students to gain genuine insight from highly-skilled lawyers who work with one of Australia’s longest-standing legal firms. 

With a listing of 27 individual lawyers, and identified as a leading firm by the independent legal guide Chambers Asia Pacific, ABL is recognised for its expertise in in: anti-bribery and corruption, banking and finance, charities, competition, construction, corporate/mergers and acquisitions, dispute resolution, employment, intellectual property, native title, real estate, restructuring/insolvency and tax.

Open to all third and fourth law students from any Victorian university, the program will be held in the offices of ABL and is designed enhance skills in negotiation, file management, dispute resolutions, legal writing and teamwork.
