DLS alumni present at prestigious law conference.
Deakin Law School (DLS) will have a strong presence at this year’s Hong Kong International Commercial Law Conference (ICLC) with alumni and Advisory Board members among a line-up of leading speakers from the judiciary and the Bar. Several DLS academics including the Dean of Law, Professor Jenni Lightowlers will also be in attendance at the conference.
DLS graduates Judge Josh Wilson QC (Federal Circuit Court of Australia), Elizabeth Ruddle QC (Foley’s List) and Kieran Hickie (Young’s List) and a member of the DLS Advisory Board, The Hon Justice Alstergren (Deputy Chief Justice Family Court of Australia) will present at sessions on the conference theme of Wise Counsel: Litigation & Arbitration in the Asia Pacific Region.
DLS is a gold sponsor of this year’s biennial ICLC which is organised by the Victorian Bar and the Commercial Bar Association. The program will cover a wide range of commercial litigation and arbitration topics comprising eight sessions across 21–22 September.
Completing a PhD with Deakin in 2008, Dr Josh Wilson QC was appointed as a judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia in 2015 where he works on a breadth of cases spanning admiralty, migration, trade practices, human rights, family law, intellectual property, extradition and bankruptcy.
Elizabeth Ruddle QC completed a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws at Deakin before signing the Victorian Bar Roll in 2005. Since then she has divided her practice equally between the civil and criminal jurisdictions and her appearances include the High Court, and the Supreme, County and Magistrates' Courts in Victoria and tribunals such as VCAT.
Kieran Hickie graduated from Deakin in 2007 with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours). Before joining the Bar in 2013, Kieran was senior associate to the Honourable Justice Croft at the Supreme Court of Victoria where he worked on a variety of commercial and arbitration proceedings including the Great Southern class action. He now advises and appears as Counsel in a wide range of commercial matters.
A member of the DLS Advisory Board, The Hon Justice Alstergren was appointed Deputy Chief Justice Family Court of Australia in 2017 where he assists the Chief Justice in the judicial administration of the Family Court. His responsibilities include case management, complaints about judges, the collection and strategic assessment of statistics, pastoral care and oversight of the Court’s committees. In the absence of the Chief Justice, the Deputy Chief Justice performs and exercises the powers of the Chief Justice.
